Walter Holtrop

Walter is a recently retired professional engineer (CP Eng.) and a Member of the Institution of Engineers, a Member of the Institute of Quarrying and a Life Member of AAPA.

He was the Manager of the AAPA Training and Advisory Centre from 1994 to 2004 and after a restructuring of AAPA became the National Surfacings Engineer which included presenting training courses but also more involvement in giving technical advice to AAPA Members and clients.

Prior to joining AAPA he was employed for 28 years at VicRoads in general construction and maintenance moving up to the senior specialist engineer in bituminous surfacing including asphalt and sprayed sealing.

Over the many years he has been a member of a number of AUSTROADS committees and working groups developing technical publications, specifications and advice to the road industry.

He lists among his career achievements improvement over the years to sprayed sealing operations and asphalt, introduction of PMB binders, safety of the public and crews, including development of the Austroads Sealing Safety Guide, safer bitumen hoses, publication of the Pavement Work Tips, safety clothing for handling hot materials, an improved Austroads Asphalt Manual and Sealing Selection and Design Method.
