This course by live webinar is presented in two half day packages of two sessions each, with an optional workshop session. It will inform on the basic principles & practices involved in unbound flexible pavement design and the program will closely follow the content in the appropriate Chapters of the Austroads Guide to Pavement Technology – Part 2: Pavement Structural Design, which is used as the principal reference and a copy is provided at the Course for each Delegate.

The materials content will however cover more information than is in the current Guide, as the selection of materials is critical to producing a road/pavement design that will deliver both structural and functional performance. This course focusses on unbound pavements and includes Case Studies and Exercises.

This practical course by live webinar is presented in two half day packages of two sessions each, with an optional workshop session. The courses focus is on sealed roads in rural environments and is ideal for project/asset managers of roads, senior supervisors, engineers and engineering technologists, working for federal, state, or local agencies, consultants and contractors.

The course will navigate through the Austroads Guide (2018) for selection and design of sprayed seals and presents it in a logically flowing manner. It starts with a basic-level introduction to functions of a pavement and functions of a surfacing and treatment selection. The focus is then on sprayed sealing, starting with fundamental seal design theory, followed by an explanation of the Austroads design methods for primes and initial seals, single/single, double/double, low volume roads, and heavy vehicle roads. Tutorials are given on each of these topics, together with their worked examples. The differences for aerodrome runway seal designs will also be briefly introduced.

The materials component will cover more information than is in the current Guide, as the selection of materials is critical to producing a road/pavement design that will deliver both structural and functional performance. Building on fundamental principles, enhanced learning in respect of materials and design traffic in preparation of the designing of bound pavement as per Austroads Guide Chapter 12 – Design of Lightly-Trafficked Pavements.

Understanding and determining design traffic is fundamental to achieving appropriate structural thickness design for quality lasting bound flexible pavements. Workshop exercises will provide reinforcement to the learning.

This Workshop by live webinar is presented in two half day packages of two sessions each and provides information on the necessary planning and management of Road Construction, together with an overview of the resources and the necessary elements required in planning and managing investigation works prior to commencement of major site works in road construction.

The Course provides an understanding of the operations involved in the loosening, removing and depositing of earth, soil and rock and information on the construction of earthworks and the preparation of pavement foundations subsequent to the construction of a pavement structure. The aspect of Roadsides is also covered as they provide an important range of functions, including: access for the construction and maintenance of the road, control of surface water drainage, the provision of underground drainage, the provision of safety barriers, signs and lighting for the safe operation of the road.

This instructional design focused workshop covers the latest practices applying to road and public space lighting design and practice. Used to support learning in the workshop is the Austroads’ Guide to Road Design Part 6B - Roadside Environment, a general guide to road lighting standards and practice applicable to traffic routes and to a lesser extent, to local collector and minor roads. It is assumed that participants are knowledgeable about lighting terminology that is covered in the workshop. Delegates will be sent pre-reading so they can become familiar with this terminology.

Additional notes will be provided in the course manual covering sustainability, security and road safety issues not fully covered in the course. Those who have attended past Lighting Workshops during the last 20 years and need a refresher will find this course ideal.

This workshop, to a large part, is based on the Australian Standard AS/NZS1158.3.1-2005 and provides instruction on the basic principles but extends this to lighting design from first principles through to a design completion.

This practical face to face course will briefly review the types of stabilisation before more detailed presentations on types of binders, material characteristics, design and mix detailing. Another feature of this course is its significant practical and project-based content which aims to provide advice on road stabilisation solutions.

The use of stabilisation technology for stabilising and recycling of materials for pavement construction & rehabilitation is widely accepted as a cost-effective method of improving long term performance and reducing whole-of-life costs of modern, heavily trafficked pavements.

Overall the Course will include discussion on the types of various stabilising binders used in road construction, their properties, manufacture, and chemical reactions during the stabilisation process and safety considerations associated with their use. The types of binders described are lime, cement, cementitious pozzolans, bitumen, chemical and synthetic polymers.

The Austroads Guides to Pavement Technology – Part 4D, Stabilised Materials, Part 4E, Recycled Materials, Part 4L, Stabilising Binders, and Part 6: Unsealed Pavements as well as the AustStab Pavement Recycling and Stabilisation Guide are used as the key references.
