A Slice of History

In November 1994 Memorandum of Understanding between Austroads (federal, state and local road authorities plus Transit New Zealand) and the Australian Asphalt Pavement Association AAPA to establish a centre focused on postgraduate education for the road pavement industries in Australia and New Zealand. The Australasian Pavement Studies and Research Centre (APSARC) was managed by a board which included a university representative and a representative from the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB).

In February 1996, an agreement between APSARC and Deakin University School of Engineering and Technology to operate a joint course by distance learning. The Master of Technology (Pavements) began in Semester 1, 1996. By March 1998 the joint APSARC/Deakin program was extended to introduce a Master of Engineering (Pavements).

In February 2000 APSARC was renamed to the Centre for Pavement Engineering Education (CPEE).

In November 2002 CPEE became a ISO Quality accredited organisation and has held that status ever since.

In January 2003 CPEE teamed up with La Trobe University and the Chifley Business School to offer a joint, University awarded, Master of Technology in Pavements and Master of Engineering in Pavements. By July of the same year, CPEE was approved to conduct higher education programs as a private provider and authorised to offer its own Master of Pavement Technology and Graduate Certificate in Pavement Technology.

In 2009 CPEE and The University of Tasmania (UTas) offered a new course on Infrastructure Asset Management incorporates specialist units developed in conjunction with the Institute of Public Works Engineers Australia (IPWEA). The Graduate Certificate in Infrastructure Asset Management was to be the first of a number of new courses developed with the University with courses on Road Engineering and Construction approved in 2012.

Throughout this time CPEE has and continues to offer a growing number of specialist short courses and workshops based on our extensive online learning material. The courses popularity have stemed from a strong mix of technical and practical aspects while encompassing the latest Austroads or applicable standards and guides.
