Kym Neaylon early civil engineering career was a practical basis in open cut mining, local government engineering, state government, road construction and contract superintending before he specialised in bituminous pavement surfacings for 30 years. Coming from a practical background, his PhD dissertation was the first in Australia in the field of sprayed sealing.
Prior to joining the Centre for Pavement Engineering Education Kym was the Research Manager, Pavements, where he led and managed a at Opus Research (NZ) in the fields of pavements, chip seals, asphalt, bituminous binders, finite element modelling, nanocomposites and materials laboratory testing. He has consulted in bituminous surfacings for most state road jurisdictions in Australia, and in New Zealand, Ethiopia and Fiji. For eight years when working at ARRB Group he project-led Austroads research projects in areas of chip sealing, bituminous binders, and skid resistance.
In addition to his current role as CPEE Executive manager (Professional Development) he is currently the Chairman of the Australian Standards ommittee on bitumen and related products for road making, and a Member of the Austroads Pavements Group. Kym is an experienced presenter to audiences at a variety of levels, both in Australia and Internationally. He enjoys leading technical teams and coaching and training staff to help them reach their full potential.
