Past CEO VicRoads & past Board Member Austroads (founding organisation of CPEE)
It is with sadness that we share the passing of Gary Liddle AO, a leader in Roads, Public Transport and Infrastructure who made a massive impact for the State of Victoria, the industry and his community. His legacy includes mentoring and supporting many current industry leaders throughout his time at VicRoads.
As a past Chair of Austroads, Gary has been part of CPEE history, articulating industry skills that need to be developed, increasing and maintaining industry standards which have now been incorporated in the academic programs at CPEE. CPEE Immediate Past Chair Peter Mitchem described Gary as “a great colleague at VicRoads and CEO who was a pleasure to work with”.
Professor Gary Liddle was recognised for his contribution to public transport in Victoria through the awarding of an Order of Australia. He studied civil engineering at Melbourne University, then rose to be Chief Executive of VicRoads, Deputy Secretary of Transport & Enterprise, interim CEO of both PTV and V/Line and then more recently as Professor in Transport at Melbourne University. He contributed more than 40 years to the transport industry.
CEO CPEE Madeleine McManus OAM said “Gary was so generous with his support, advice and mentorship with so many young engineers. I experienced this when I became the first woman to Chair Engineers Australia for Vic, where we worked together for the bushfire recovery in 2009, and he then went on to be a foundation partner of the Multidiscipline international student engagement program I started at Monash (Monash Industry Team Initiative- MITI ). He always embraced transformative innovation and encouraged the next generation to challenge the status quo - I will miss his counsel.”
Many CPEE alum, academic and professional staff, CPEE Council members, CPEE Academic Board members, committee members have worked with Gary over his career and mourn his loss.
We celebrate Gary’s contribution to our industry and pass on our deepest sympathies to his family.
Vale Gary Liddle AO.
