CPEE Honours Long Standing Contributors

The CPEE Academic Board determined to recognise two of its stalwarts of many years, both of whom have just "retired" from acting as Tutors for key CPEE Units of study in the Graduate Certificate and the Masters "of Pavement Technology" programs. Long-time industry recognised experts in their field both Walter Holtrop and John Rebbechi were awarded CPEE "Certificates of Appreciation" to recognise the valuable time and contribution to furthering the educational aims of CPEE and fostering enhanced learning and skills development within the roads and pavements sector Australia wide.

Walter Holtrop

Walter has held many roles at Vicroads and in his early career, Walter was involved in all aspects of bituminous surfacing, including managing spray crews across Victoria. He became one of the countries, if not the worlds, leading experts on sprayed seals.

When he left Vicroads to join AAPA, Walter was appointed as the Principal Surfacing Engineer. In this role he was able to provide his many great skills and knowledge across the whole of the country.

Recognising his contribution to the industry, Walter was awarded an ARRB Achievement Award at the First International Sprayed Sealing Conference in 2008. This was presented in recognition of his contribution to sprayed seal technology over the last 40 years, and his involvement in research and development and his dedication to training and professional development.

John Rebbechi

John, a civil engineer with a lengthy experience in asphalt and bituminous surfacing that began in 1964 when he joined the Asphalt Division of Country Roads Board, now Vicroads, as a young graduate engineer. From 1968 to 1974 he was manager of Readymix Asphalt in Victoria before returning to VicRoads in a series of specialist and managerial roles. In 1992 he joined CSR Readymix as National Technical Manager, taking a similar role with the merged CSR Emoleum in 1996.

In 1997 he left CSR Emoleum to form his own independent technical consultancy trading as Roadcor Pty Ltd. As well as providing investigation and troubleshooting advice to the road industry, he is extensively involved in drafting of handbooks, technical notes and training materials for Austroads, VicRoads, AAPA and CPEE

In addition he was one of CPEE's earliest Tutors and until this year continued in this vital role. He has also been an active participant in the technical committees and working groups of Austroads, AAPA and Standards Australia and the author of numerous conference papers. Along the way he gained a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration and became a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia.
