CPEE Chairman Passes the Baton

After eight years as the Independent Chairman of CPEE, David Anderson decided to step down at the AGM last November stating his belief that "it is in the best interests of CPEE to have a new Chairman who will no doubt bring new ideas and a new approach to leading CPEE in the future".

David as part of his final Chairman's Report took the opportunity to note:

Strategic Planning and Governance: In order to consolidate all of the change activity being undertaken, or planned to be undertaken by CPEE, the Council decided to update and extend the CPEE strategic plan. This was achieved mid-2015, following a great deal of input by a special committee appointed by the Council, by the Academic Board, by Council members themselves and by CPEE staff. We now have a robust plan that will guide all of CPEE's activities for the next 3 years.

This was acheived mid-2015, following a great deal of input including planning workshops led by Professor Nita Temmerman, a special committee appointed by the Council, by the Academic Board, by Council members themselves and CPEE staff.

Review of Masters of Pavement Technology Program: Established in the latter part of the year was a formal review of CPEE's Master of Pavement Technology Course. This was being undertaken by a formal Review Panel of internal and external experts, led by Professor Arun Kumar, Emeritus Professor, RMIT University, Melbourne and Professor in Infrastructure Engineering, QUT, Brisbane.

Unit Reviews: One of the special attributes of CPEE, is that its course material is reviewed regularly, and updated to include the latest information from research and industry practice. Each year we update a number of units and we are always appreciative of Austroads' assistance in funding this work. In 2014 – 15 the following units were reviewed:

  • "Industrial and Heavy Duty Pavements"
  • "Insitu Stabilisation"
  • "Pavement Evaluation and Rehabilitation" and
  • "Asphalt Mix Design".

Short Courses: Although the level of interest and participation in short courses have, overall, been solid, there is growing evidence that CPEE will feel the effect of the tightening of client budgets in the near future. Nevertheless credit must go to CPEE staff, and especially Chief Executive Ray Farrelly for a very successful short course program. In 2014 – 15 many more (than previously) courses were held in regional Australia, including two custom designed courses for individual municipalities (a credit to Port Macquarie-Hastings, and Young Shires). This is a very pleasing trend.

Academic Board: Much of the increased activity relating to the ongoing development of CPEE's academic quality and systems has landed on the desk of the CPEE Academic Board, ably led by Professor Kerry McManus with strong support from Professor Frank Bullen. In all, more than 1000 professional have benefited from CPEEs academic and short course programs in 2014-15, and this is a crucial measure of success for the organisation.
