CPEE Takes Training Direct to The Site Office

CPEE believes strongly that continuing professional development for people working in regional areas should be supported.

As a continuation of our commitment in this regard, we accepted the invitation to present training at a major-project construction site office located on remote farming property about 90 km north of Moree, New South Wales, or 40 km South of Goondiwindi, Queensland.

This specialised training workshop ‘Rural Road Surfacings – sealed’ was initiated by joint project partner Fulton Hogan who, with the Roads and Maritime Service (RMS), are undertaking the $122 million Mungle Back Creek to Boggabilla, Newell Highway upgrade.

As an indication of the remoteness of the location, CPEE Presenter Dr Kym Neaylon was provided with the following instructions on how to get to the site office: “Turn left at gate nine about one kilometre south of the bridge”.

Sixteen project staff attended. To minimise impact on the construction program-of-works the group was split in half with the same course repeated over two consecutive days.

Kym shared his decades of practical knowledge in sprayed sealing with a very attentive and appreciative audience of project engineers and surveillance officers, who are now entering the sealing stage of this large Newell Highway upgrade project. In addition, Kym also went out on site to inspect firsthand the works and discuss with key Fulton Hogan and RMS staff some of the issues such projects face. This added interaction was very warmly welcomed as all concerned strive for a quality outcome in trying conditions.

Kym stated, “It was a most challenging design environment and the insightful questions from these geographically-isolated delegates clearly indicated they had a thirst for knowledge. The workshop proved a most rewarding experience both for me, and I think for all concerned.”
