Coming from a practical background, his PhD dissertation was the first in Australia in the field of chip sealing.
His current role at the Centre for Pavement Engineering Education is to lead the ongoing development and implementation of CPEE’s innovative professional development including the Short Course Program for transport professionals within the road sector.
Prior to joining CPEE Kym was the Research Manager, Pavements, where he lead and managed a at Opus Research (NZ) in the fields of pavements, chip seals, asphalt, bituminous binders, finite element modelling, nanocomposites and materials laboratory testing.
He has consulted in bituminous surfacings for most state road jurisdictions in Australia, and in New Zealand, Ethiopia and Fiji. For eight years at ARRB he project-led Austroads research projects in areas of chip sealing, bituminous binders, and skid resistance, and is currently the chairman of the Australian Standards committee on bitumen and related products for road making.
Kym is an experienced presenter to audiences at a variety of levels. He enjoys leading technical teams, and coaching and training staff to help them reach their full potential.
