This Unit introduces the context, rationale, strategy and mechanisms of project management. It commences with definitions of such as project stakeholders, project charter, project life cycles and phases, quality systems and management.

Unit content includes an introduction to project management principles, techniques and processes. It investigates the specific tasks that need to be undertaken in order to initiate, plan, implement, execute and close an infrastructure project. ISO 21500:2012: Guidance on Project Management and the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) are introduced as source materials.

  • Topic 1

    Definitions of key terms in project management including; project stakeholders, project charter, project life cycles, planning, scope, quality systems, project execution, monitoring and project closure.

  • Topic 2

    Project phases of selection, initiation, planning, implementation, execution and closure

  • Topic 3

    Project charter development and option selection within the initiation phase.

  • Topic 4

    The key aspects of project planning; scope, cost, quality, human resources, communications, risks and procurement.

  • Topic 5

    Project execution; monitoring, control, site safety and contract administration.

  • Topic 6

    The role of scheduling as a key instrument for defining required activities and responsibilities for completing activities.

  • Topic 7

    Project finalisation and post project evaluation

  • Topic 8
